What is a Lung-Scan?

The Heart-Scan team now offer the CT Lung-Scan.  Electron Beam Computed Tomography scanning of the Lung is used to detect abnormalities in the lung.   Lung cancer is the number 1 cancer killer killing more people than colon, prostrate and breast cancer combined.  Lung cancer is usually detected late in the course of the disease where treatment is less effective.  Using the revolutionary new CT Lung-Scan we can detect lung cancer at its earliest stages thereby increasing the treatment success rates. The special CT scanner images the lung in very thin sections in just one breath hold. Using this revolutionary technology, it is possible to detect growths and lung nodules as small as two to five millimetres, much smaller than can be seen with conventional chest X-ray and too small for symptoms to develop.

By finding lung cancer at a smaller size, when it is more likely to beconfined to the chest, Lung-Scan increases your odds of survival and provides and extremely sensitive method for the early detection of lung cancer.

How do I know if I need the test?

The most common symptoms of lung cancer are cough (75%) and hemoptysis (coughing up blood) (50%).  These symptoms are already present in 90% patients at the time at diagnosis.  In the remainder of patients, lung cancer is discovered only incidentally on an X-ray done for an unrelated condition.  Most patients have metastatic cancer, cancer which has spread outside of the lung, at the time of diagnosis.  If you have any persistent chest problems, are between 50-80 years old, smoke, or have a family history of lung cancer then you may benefit from a Lung-Scan.

How do I prepare for the test?

No preparation is needed for this scan.  No fasting, gowns or needles.

What will happen during the test?

You will be taken into the scanning room and asked to lie down on the scanning bed.  Our radiographer will tell you when the scan is about to commence.  You will be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds and then you simply lie on our scanning table while we acquire pictures of your lungs.

What will the test result tell me?

You will be presented with a report which will tell you the presence of lung abnormalities.

What happens next?

Depending on your scan result you may be referred to a specialist physician who will advise you on the course of your treatment.  We recommend a repeat scan every 2-5 years depending on your individual case.

7 England Lung Scan A lung scan is a nuclear scanning test that is most commonly used to detect a blood clot that is preventing normal blood flow to part of a lung (pulmonary embolism). See an illustration of a lung scan in London.Two types of lung scans are usually done:Ventilation scan or scans. During a ventilation scan, a radioactive tracer gas is inhaled into the lungs. Pictures from this scan or scanning can show areas of the lungs that are not receiving enough air or that retain too much air. Areas of the lung that retain too much air show up as bright or “hot” spots on the pictures. Areas that are not receiving enough air show up as dark or “cold” spots.
Perfusion scan. During a perfusion scan, a radioactive tracer substance is injected into a vein in the arm. It travels through the bloodstream and into the lungs. Pictures from this scan can show areas of the lungs that are not receiving enough blood. The tracer is absorbed evenly in areas of the lung where the blood flow is normal. These areas show up with the tracer distributed evenly. Areas that are not receiving enough blood show up as cold spots scan.

Systematic Lung Scans Reveal a High Frequency of Silent Pulmonary Embolism in Patients With Proximal Deep Venous Thrombosis
A high frequency of asymptomatic pulmonary embolism (PE) has been reported in patients with deep venous thrombosis (Lung Scanning) in studies of a limited number of patients using varying criteria for lung scan assessment. Objectives To estimate the frequency of PE using systematic lung scans in a large group of outpatients with Lung Scanning and to compare the results using varying lung scan assessment criteria. Methods An international multicenter study comparing 2 different regimens of low-molecular-weight heparin nadroparin in Lung Scanning: perfusion lung scans were performed in 622 outpatients with no clinical indication of PE and with proximal Lung Scanning confirmed by venography. Three hundred seventy-nine of these patients underwent ventilation lung scans. High-probability (HP) scans for PE were assessed separately using either ventilation scans or chest radiographs to define mismatched perfusion defects. Click Here

The estimated frequency of silent PE was 39.5% to 49.5%. During a 3-month follow-up period during which the patients received therapy, the rate of PE recurrence was low (1.3%) and did not differ between patients with baseline HP scans and those with normal scans. Conclusions Regardless of what interpretative criteria are used for assessing lung scans in PE, the frequency of silent PE is 40% to 50% in patients with DVT. A baseline lung scan may easily detect PE in these patients but is not useful for predicting early thromboembolic recurrences that may occur during therapy. Click Here
