Nuclear Cardiology

Nuclear Cardiology is a branch of cardiology and medical imaging which uses small amounts of radioactive substances for the diagnosis of heart disease.  Radioactive substances are administered and the amount of radiation emitted measured to assess abnormalities in its structure and function.  Nuclear Cardiology provides a powerful and precise tool in the field of heart disease detection.  Myocardial Perfusion (MPI) and Thallium scanning are Nuclear Cardiology procedures used in the diagnosis of heart disease.

Departments carrying out Nuclear Cardiology need to obtain a licence from the government which is only issued after a thorough evaluation of the facility and the doctors’ training.  Our department is a centre of excellence for Nuclear Cardiology both nationally and internationally. Our Medical Director, Dr. Peter Smith is a pioneer of Nuclear Cardiology techniques.  He has researched and published extensively in the field for over 30 years and many of the standard UK practices in Nuclear Cardiology were developed by him and his team.

Nuclear Cardiology is a very safe and effective way of detecting and diagnosing the extent of heart disease.
